Now that it is nearly winter, here is yet another domestic concern you should be aware of for the wellness of your household: humidity levels. Too much humidity in the home can cause mold, excessive condensation, damp spots on the walls and ceilings, and health problems (such as respiratory issues and mold related sicknesses). Too little humidity can cause static electricity, wood and furniture damage, and health problems (dry skin, bloody noses, and respiratory issues). Here are some tips that you can follow to experience a more comfortable winter.

  • If you have a humidistat, adjust it accordingly to outdoor temperatures. If outside temperature decreases, so too should your indoor humidity (to prevent indoor condensation and mold). If the air becomes too dry or if you notice your wood floors start to split, raise the humidity levels.
  • If you do not have a humidistat, you can use a humidifier and dehumidifier. Make sure to properly manage them (such as cleaning and regularly emptying the stagnant water) to avoid extra wear and tear on the equipment as well as improving the air quality in your home.
  • Inspect your home for areas that may generate humidity. Look for things like exposed dirt in crawl spaces and gaps or leaks in the outdoor vents to clothing dryers, furnaces, and water heaters. Check the seals to doors and windows leading outside and be sure to patch up anything with a draft from the outside. Be wary of frequent showers and baths, pipe leaks, houseplants and even dishwashers; they too can cause too much humidity if you don’t keep an eye out for them.
  • Run fans when cooking and bathing. This greatly helps keep excess humidity down, and consequently, lowers the chance of unwanted mold.
  • Keep doors and windows closed to the outside if there is excessive moisture.
  • Use outdoor mats to wipe your footwear off before entering the home. It’s also a good idea take off your shoes and leave them by the door, even if it’s dry outside.
