Douglasville Heating Company | Tips to Improve your Air Quality

Now that summer is over, we tend to not worry about our indoor air quality due to the lack of pollen and other allergens that plague us during the warmer seasons. Unfortunately, we let our guards down and our indoor air quality in our homes tends to worsen during the fall and winter, which helps contributes to colds and other sicknesses. Here is a list of tips to remind what can be done to help keep the air in your home clean and healthy:

  • Ventilation –There is a good chance that your heating system does not pull in an adequate amount of fresh air to circulate. If this is the case, consider using attic or window fans and opening windows as the weather permits to help increase the quality of air in your home. Remember to be careful when doing so to avoid wasting precious heat in your home.
  • Moisture –Keeping moisture levels between 30-60% will help reduce the amount of mildew, mold, and mites that can invade your home. Make sure areas that generate a lot of moisture, such as bathrooms, stay dry. Also, properly maintaining your humidifier will help keeping moisture levels under control a lot easier.
  • Regular Cleaning – Regularly cleaning your home will be the most effective way to improve your air quality. Dusting and vacuuming will help keep air pollutants such as dander, dust mites, and dirt at minimal levels. The rooms with a higher amount of traffic and activity should be cleaned more often, but that does not mean that those rarely used should hardly be cleaned. Try to avoid relying heavily on chemical cleaners and air fresheners when you clean; they can also contribute to poor indoor air quality. Also, remember to properly dry areas after cleaning in order to reduce the risk of mold and mildew.
