EFFICIENT WINDOWS – KEEP HEAT IN AND OLD MAN WINTER OUT

cleaningwindowChoosing windows for your home can be overwhelming. Windows provide scenic views, day lighting, moonlighting, ventilation and solar heating. While you want them to also reflect your style and enhance the look of your home, you also need to consider if they are energy efficient.

Unfortunately windows can account for 10% to 25% of your heating bill. Old Man Winter hasn’t left parts of the country just yet, so it’s important to have windows that keep winter out and warmth in. Your best protection is to install double-pane windows with low emissivity (low-e) coating on the glass to reflect heat back into the room during the cold, winter months.

If upgrading your windows isn’t in your budget, here are 5 tips to improve window performance and help keep heat in:

1. CLEAR PLASTIC SHEET ON A FRAME: Use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet on a frame or tape clear plastic film to the inside of your window frames. Ensure the plastic is sealed tightly to the frame to avoid any drafts.

2. INSULATING WINDOW SHADES: Install tight-fitting shades on drafty windows.

3. CURTAINS: At night, close curtains and shades and then reopen during the day.

4. CLEAN WINDOWS: To help let the warmth of the sun enter your home, keep windows clean on the inside and outside.

5. STORM WINDOWS: Consider installing exterior or interior storm windows to help reduce heat loss by 25-50%. If you already have storm windows, make sure to repair and weatherize them when necessary to ensure performance.

If you find yourself in a position to consider investing in more efficient windows, remember the benefits of added comfort, improved aesthetics and functionality, and increased energy savings, can make the investment well worth considering.
