Saving Money this Spring and Summer Part Two | Douglasville Air Conditioning Company

Last week, we discussed how attic insulation and ventilation (i.e. attic fans) can help conserve the amount of energy you use during these hot months, therefore saving you money on your energy bills.  Today, we will look at a few of the smaller and easier steps you can take to save money this spring and summer.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are a low power way to spread cool air throughout your home. You should, though, be sure that the fan is rotating in the proper direction. Ceiling fans do not actually create cool air; however, they do circulate the cool air around the room and home. For the summer months, the ceiling fan should rotate in a counter-clockwise motion. This will create a welcome breeze in the room. If you are not sure if the ceiling fan is on the correct setting – try standing beneath the fan as it is rotating. Can you feel a great amount of air blowing down on you? If so, it is on the correct setting. To change the setting, most fans simply have a switch on the side. If you can not identify the switch, you can most likely locate that particular fan’s manufacturer guide online.

Change Air Filters

Changing your air filters every 1-2 months will help your system running more efficiently, creating lower bills for you.  The dirtier your air filter, the hard your air conditioning system has to work to cool your home. Changing your air filters is an easy and inexpensive way to allow your air conditioning system to run optimally.  This will also increase the life of your AC system, preventing future breakdowns and costly repairs. There are so many benefits to changing your air filters that you really can’t afford not to do it!

Close the drapes

Another way to keep your home cool without breaking the bank is by keeping your drapes and blinds closed during the hot hours of the day. If the sun is beaming into your home, your AC system has to work harder to compensate for that heat. Close the drapes with the sun is beating down on your home. During the cooler hours of the morning and late evening, you can reopen your drapes and blinds.
